John McCain's running mates with poll

Senator John McCain is now officially the Republican nominee for the 2008 Presidential contest.
Looking at the red/blue divide of 2004 and it looks like John McCain has a better than 50/50 chance of winning the White House for the Republicans for a third time in a row.
George W. Bush is no where on the ballots so his radioactive disapproval poll numbers will not really matter come November.
With the Democratic Party in a protracted battle between Clinton and Obama that will cost millions of dollars and is sure to alienate a huge portion of the active electorate, John McCain's chances get better even more.
For the next several weeks, McCain has to just quietly start raising money from the so-far hesitant Republican purses while the Democrats rip the party in two.
If Clinton succeeds, she risks losing the African American electorate that has been the hard rock core of the Democratic base.
If Obama succeeds, he risks losing a portion of women voters that the Democrats are dependent on.
McCain would be clever enough to seize on this turmoil by selecting a Black Republican, like Colin Powell, if Barack Obama fails or a Republican woman, like Kay Bailey Hutchison, if Hillary Clinton fails to capture the nomination. Hell, he could go for Condi Rice and cover both bases.
Or does he play is safe and just falls back on the zealous theocons by selecting Mike Huckabee or the wealthy corporate cons by selecting Mitt Romney.
This is all a bad dream for me right now but I do see it happening. Who would John McCain pick to be his running mate?
