Moyers 9PM EDT- Toobin on the Supreme Court

Fri May 23, 2008 at 05:42:10 PM PDT

As always Moyers show will offer what the TM rarely does, a conversation about this election's choice that will affect our lives for generations to come.

Legal affairs journalist Jeffrey Toobin joins Bill Moyers on the JOURNAL to discuss how our next president might shape the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, Toobin explains, is not separate from politics as popular imagination supposes.

You know, we talk about Supreme Court Justices often as if they exist in some sort of world apart from politics....And I think a rational view of the Court, is that it is part of politics. It is not separate from -- and the presidential election I think will determine the future of the Court for decades.

PDT Kossacks - Moyers tonight is must watch TV

Fri May 09, 2008 at 07:03:03 PM PDT

Drive by diary here, just watched it here in Pennsyltucky and it was outstanding as usual.

In his new book, TORTURE TEAM: RUMSFELD'S MEMO AND THE BETRAYAL OF AMERICAN VALUES, Philippe Sands draws on official documents and interviews with key players to explain how the U.S. Military went from interrogations strictly regulated by the U.S. ARMY FIELD MANUAL 34-52 to enhanced interrogations that included sleep deprivation, nudity, stress positions, and water boarding.

The California Nurses Association proposes "CheneyCare" for what ails America.

In this weeks BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, Rose Ann Demaro, the Executive Director of the California Nurses Association, argued that calling America's approach to health care a "system" is innaccurate.

OMG-KO just compared McCain to Churchill! w/poll

Tue Mar 04, 2008 at 07:47:49 PM PDT

I could not believe what I was hearing.

Yes, Churchill was basically a political nonentity in England in 1938, and yes he then emerged as the the great leader that unified England and Allies to triumph in WWII.

But............holy hyperbolic punditry.

To compare McBush's dead campaign a few months ago to now official Rethug candidate and subsequently imply his future is now as a 'great leader' to get us through this time of peril.....etc, etc..

Brian Williams added

"I heard you make that comparison to Churchill earlier Keith, and I just loved it

"

I swear, I'm swearing off all visual and media coverage of this election.

Inner tubes for me from now on, it'll help keep my blood pressure down. (I hope).

Update  edited the title to be clear that the comparison was to McCain not Bush

Maddow... Party, Power or Personality? w/Poll

Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 04:33:27 PM PDT

I caught this on Digby today and thought it deserved a wider audience. Digby was commenting on the MSNBC coverage of last night's Michigan returns and added this gem by the always excellent Rachel Maddow :

Update: Maddow just made an interesting point. She said the difference between the three candidates is how they define change:

Hillary believes the thing that needs to be changed is that Bush needs to be out and the Democrats need to be back in there. Edwards believes the thing that needs to be changed is that the moneyed interests and the lobbyists need to be taken out of the political game. Obama believes that what needs to change is that he needs to be the president because he is a personally unifying character...

Democrats are being asked whether they believe in party, in which case they should be for Hillary, if they believe in power they should be for Edwards and if they believe in personality, they should vote for Obama.

Moyers 9PM EST- Steele on Race and Obama

Fri Jan 11, 2008 at 05:45:10 PM PDT

Updated to change title, apparently Race an Racism has reared it's ugly head, even here on Kos.

If it's Friday, it's Bill Moyers Journal night, lucky us!

The impressive Kathleen Hall Jamieson providing more campaign watching tips;

Kathleen Hall Jamieson spoke with Bill Moyers last week about life after Iowa and the power of good speechmaking. She returns this week to look behind the flurry of post-New Hampshire predictions and how to watch debates:
"I recommend not watching before the debate and after the debate. I recommend that after the debate you turn the debate off and you talk with your family about what you saw and what was important to you. And you think about what you saw."

Shelby Steele, 'self described black conservative'

author of the recent book A BOUND MAN: WHY WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT OBAMA AND WHY HE CAN'T WIN.

Tonight on Bill Moyers-West Coasters can still catch it!

Fri Jan 04, 2008 at 07:41:31 PM PDT

This is not really a diary, just a heads up for you Kossacks on the west coast, you may still be able to watch Moyers show coming up at 9PM PST.

Bill Moyers Journal

His guests were Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich.

I do not think there could be a more damning indictment of the corporate media and their shills that these three interviews.

The show opens with Jamieson, whose succinct and insightful observations should be tattooed on all of our foreheads!

My local paper here in Washington, PA has a ridiculous on-line poll asking whether Al Gore deserved the Nobel Peace Prize or not!

I usually ignore their polls, but this just struck me absurd.

Naturally the editorial slant of this paper is Republican, however in fairness they do occasionally run a Krugman column.

Arianna asking for input for Pelosi interview on Monday

Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 06:58:20 PM PDT

OK Kossacks, here's our chance to get to Nancy's ear and let her know how deeply dissappointed and angry we are on so many levels.

Two outrageous examples were front paged again today by Kos MD-04: Pelosi to endorse and fundraise for corrupt Al Wynn

Though crediting activists for their "passion," Pelosi called it "a waste of time" for them to target Democrats. "They are advocates," she said. "We are leaders."

..a fundraiser scheduled next month in Montgomery County with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) should help them rake in the dough.

I say this sounds like a plea for help from Arianna, don't you?

On Monday, I'm going to be videotaping an exclusive HuffPost interview with Nancy Pelosi. And I'd love your input on what questions I should ask.

Arianna is asking for questions, I say we mosey on over to Huffpo

KO say's frequent poster is 2nd worst person +

Thu Aug 02, 2007 at 06:14:36 PM PDT

immediately prior to switching over to KO, I listened to (can't bring myself to watch Faux news)to the Dodd shout fest on O'Reilly.

KO, called out the diarist that confronted Billo at his home and neighborhood, I agree. Obviously not the 2nd worst person, but I sure wish he had not indulged his need to try to "hoist Billo with his own petard".
IMO, that kind of tactic will always backfire.

Major kudos to Sen. Dodd for taking on the No Spin Zone and turning it into the Twilight Zone!

My Gawd, O'Reilly is such a bully (as Molly Ivans said), he has had a whole day to line up his defense, none other than that veritable icon of sense and reason: Dennis Miller(he makes me ashamed that he hails from PA)!

I am absolutely amazed that anyone could or would take either of them as serious persons, worthy of having any attention paid!

I apologize for lack of links, etc, I am on dial-up, hence the wait and reluctant listening to Billo's show tonight, I just can't download audio or video very well.

Please unrecommend offensive(edited) diary!

Tue Jul 31, 2007 at 07:23:56 PM PDT

Edited, removed Dood's name from the title.

I don't know about the rest of you, but personally I am offended by the photo in Dood's diary.

This is not what I expect to see (warning or not) in a Kos recommended diary!

I have been a big fan of Dood's posts, and looked forward to this one. Wow, what a shock! I am not a prude, can appreciate satire(I hope) with the best of you, but damn, this is way over the line!

I even posted a cautionary comment:

Dood, I'm sorry, it's not for me, this is a site created for electing democrats!

What in the hell are we doing, adding more fuel to the O'Falafel fire?

Personally, I find the photo offensive, and feel it has no place on Kos!

And, I'm not so old yet, that I don't have a sense of humor, pretty much have loved all your stuff, Dood NO, please delete!

The blowback from this sort of thing is just not worth it!

which was taken as satire and got 3 rec's.

So in frustration, I am humbly asking those who recommended the diary to think about the consequences, and do you really want the rest of the world to view Daily Kos, through such a lens?

Action diary: Filibuster tonight! Gov Dean and DNC has an easy to use

Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 03:10:53 PM PDT

link to contact both of your Senators about tonight's threatened filibuster.

I received the DNC email just now and since there is no Open Thread up, just wanted to post an FYI diary for everyone.

The goal is 50,000 emails, they have reached almost 25,000 right now, so go forth and email!!!!!!!

It's going to be a long night for the U.S. Senate.

Senate Republicans are threatening to filibuster a bill by Senators Levin and Reed that would require President Bush to begin troop withdrawal within 120 days, with most coming home by April 2008.

Instead, they're threatening to block the vote, and we're going to force them to explain themselves in front of the American people.

So let's show Senator Reid that we're united behind him. We've created a simple tool that will let you write a letter and fax it to your Senators instantly -- you can let them know all night long just how much opposition there is to the war in Iraq.

Put the coffee on!

Update. Moyers tonight 9pm EDT-Impeachment on the table!

Fri Jul 13, 2007 at 04:39:31 PM PDT

I love Bill Moyers, he is national treasure, and am so grateful he has returned to PBS, sharing his insight, wisdom, talent and skills with those of us hungry for some real journalism.

Looks like a great night for Kossacks to watch Moyers.

His guests are Bruce Fein who wrote the first article of impeachment against Clinton and John Nichols, the Washington correspondent for The Nation.

Here's a taste of what we can look forward to viewing

I saw "SICKO" yesterday with my 76 year old

Thu Jul 05, 2007 at 05:51:05 PM PDT

mother. I can't tell you what an excellent film this is, highly recommended, and must viewing for every American.

I have seen all of Moore's films except Roger & Me, and was a fan. But not even the excellent Fahrenheit  911 prepared me for the impact of SICKO.

We saw the movie at 2:15 in a metropolitan S.Pittsburgh multi-plex. The parking lot was surprisingly packed, who knew so many folks go to movies on the 4th of July? I sure didn't.

The movie was showing in 2 theatres, at staggered times. Our showing was about 1/2 full. As I glanced over the folks in the audience I was amazed to find that fully 4/5th's of the audience were senior citizens and very few folks under 40!

I would have never thought this demographic would take the time on the 4th to see a Michael Moore film. And BTW, there was significant applause at the end!

Delay says "His Adultery different from Newt's"

Tue May 29, 2007 at 05:43:56 PM PDT

From a blurb on Huffpo, saw this headline and just about went nuts waiting for my dial up to get to the link to read the quote.

In the book, DeLay criticizes Gingrich for, among other things, conducting an affair with a Capitol Hill employee during the 1998 impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. (The woman later became Gingrich's third wife.) "Yes, I don't think that Newt could set a high moral standard, a high moral tone, during that moment," DeLay said. "You can't do that if you're keeping secrets about your own adulterous affairs." He added that the impeachment trial was another of his "proudest moments." The difference between his own adultery and Gingrich's, he said, "is that I was no longer committing adultery by that time, the impeachment trial. There's a big difference." He added, "Also, I had returned to Christ and repented my sins by that time."

Ok, let me get his straight, be an adulterer, then stop the behavior, repent, and then you can judge others for the same behavior you just engaged in. Rinse, repeat, rinse repeat, rinse repeat. Have a "proudest moment"

Bill Moyers Journal Returns to PBS- Host a House Party to celebrate!

Thu Apr 12, 2007 at 05:48:59 PM PDT

I found great news waiting for me in by inbox tonight:

My personal hero Bill Moyers, is returning to PBS on April 25th, with what should be acknowledged by everyone as the best example of what an investigative journalism show should be.

On Wednesday, April 25, thousands of people will gather in homes and community centers throughout the country to watch "Buying the War," a powerful segment that shows how Big Media were complicit in shaping the "public mind" toward the war. Prior to viewing Bill Moyers will be available for an exclusive conference call with Free Press activists.

Santorum to join Faux News as Commentator

Thu Mar 01, 2007 at 06:31:23 PM PDT

Just saw this on Huffpo:

Well, this seems better than having him on the Supreme Court: Rick Santorum will join Fox News as a contributor. The news was broken by FishbowlDC and confirmed to Eat The Press by a Fox News spokeswoman. A formal announcement is coming.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

As a PA resident who foolishly thought we wouldn't have Little Ricky to kick around anymore, can't decide if I should hate this move, or be so damn grateful for the endless idiotic fodder he is going to supply!
